Public can comment on Mesa Verde plan
Mesa Verde National Park has prepared the Environmental Assessment for Entrance Station Improvements at Mesa Verde National Park. The document, which describes and examines the impacts of the proposed project, will be on public review through May 26.

This environmental assessment is a follow-up to one prepared in 2002 for the proposed construction of a Cultural Center at the North Entrance to Mesa Verde National Park, according to a statement from the park. That assessment concluded with a Finding of No Significant Impact. The park continues to work on the project, has completed construction drawings for a curatorial facility and is in design for a visitor information center. The two components will comprise the Mesa Verde Visitor and Research Center. As design on these facilities has progressed, it became apparent that the original 2002 concept needs revision, including the entrance road into this facility and an enlarged wastewater treatment.

In addition, alternative locations for entrance stations and associated functions in the entrance area are evaluated in this environmental assessment. The office that supports the entrance functions is an inadequate trailer and does not meet Americans With Disabilities Act standards or building codes. Alternate locations within the entrance area will be studied for the office, the entrance kiosks, rest rooms and winter use sand storage.

Potential reviewers can obtain a copy of the document from the National Park Service Planning, Environment, and Public Comment Web site, http://parkplanning.nps.gov, or by calling Allan Loy at (970) 529-5067. Reviewers can post comments directly to the Web site or submit written comments addressed to the Superintendent at Mesa Verde National Park, P.O. Box 8, Mesa Verde National Park, Colorado 81330. For more information on this environmental assessment or to express concerns about these issues, contact Allan Loy at (970) 529-5067.
