Archaeologist presents ‘Desert Varnish in the Four Corners’
The Hisatsinom Chapter of the Colorado Archaeological Society will present Tim Kearns to discuss Desert Varnish in the Four Corners on Tuesday, Oct. 2, at 7 p.m. at the Cortez Cultural Center, 25 N. Market St. Desert varnish is a naturally occurring coating on exposed rock surfaces and is relatively common in the Four Corners region, and often associated with prehistoric rock art. Kearns will begin by addressing various aspects of desert varnish including formation, chemical components, age, and relevance, and will then discuss its occurrence in the region. He will summarize the investigation of two prehistoric tool stone procurement (quarry) sites near Montezuma Creek where many of the artifacts were coated with desert varnish, and address the ramifications of this assemblage to the prehistory of the region and describe a varnish dating technique that was applied to the artifacts. The presentation will conclude with a discussion of new directions in desert varnish research. ‘The Line’ will screen at Conscious Movie Night
Center of Light presents a Special Feature Conscious Movie Night, “The Line”, Tuesday, Oct. 2 at 7 p.m. at the Sophia Peace Center, 19581 Road 31. In Dolores, turn left on 11th, go 1.8 miles, and look for the large sign with the dove, on the left. From Emmy Award-winning producer Linda Midgett, The Line is a ground-breaking documentary chronicling the new face of poverty in America. As Sojourners CEO Jim Wallis puts it, “more and more of our friends are in poverty — in the pews, in our workplaces — through no fault of their own, and they are slipping below the poverty level.” In the Chicago suburbs, a single dad was laid off from his bank and is now a regular at the local food pantry, trying to make it by with three kids. On Chicago’s west side, deep poverty creates a culture of violence and hopelessness. On the Gulf Coast, a fisherman struggles post-BP oil spill and Hurricane Katrina because environmental crises mean the loss of his livelihood. In North Carolina, we see that hard work and determination don’t always mean success. What does this mean for the future of our country? How do real-life stories change the narrative about poverty? Driver safety course offered by AARP
AARP will sponsor a driver safety course on Thursday, Oct. 11 from 12:30 to 5 p.m. at the Calvin Denton Room in the Empire Electric building, 801 N. Broadway, Cortez. This four-hour course is authorized by the state of Colorado, and designed to meet the needs of older drivers. The course will review safe driving techniques as well as Colorado traffic laws. Completion of this course can qualify you for a discount on your automobile insurance. The course is available to all motorists whether or not they are members of AARP. The cost is $12 for AARP members and $14 for nonmembers, to be paid by check (no cash or credit cards) which will cover materials. M-CHS gears up for fall drama production
Montezuma-Cortez High School drama department is gearing up for their fall production, “Arsenic and Old Lace,” a dark comedy classic. The 2012-2013 theatre season will feature shows from the 1930’s and 1940s era, keeping with the department’s theme this year, “A New Deal.” The show will run on Oct. 12 at 7 p.m., and Oct. 13 and 20 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. in the M-CHS auditorium. Low-Cost Fall Pet Vaccination Clinic
For Pets’ Sake Humane Society will host a Low-Cost Dog and Cat Vaccination Clinic from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 13 at the IFA Country Store, 10501 Hwy. 491 in Cortez. Veterinarian Dr. Sue Grabbe with Four Corners MASH will offer dog and cat packages which include rabies, distemper, parvo (dogs), leukemia (cats), and more for $39 each, or $14 for rabies only. Packages without rabies shot are just $32. Exact change is appreciated; checks are okay, but no credit cards please. Dogs must be on leashes and cats must be in carriers. All-day Mexican meal fundraiser for Parish kitchen
Antonio’s Restaurant, 104 E. Main St., will host an “Afternoon Delight” fundraising dinner from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 14 for the kitchen remodeling project for St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church’s Parish Hall. The church needs to renovate the kitchen to provide a facility for updated, workable and efficient usage, as well as to host events for the parish. “Afternoon Delight” will include a special menu with a choice of two complete Mexican dinners with sides, and will include tea or coffee and a dessert. The cost is $8 for adults and $5 for kids under 8 years old. Alcoholic beverages or fountain drinks are not included in the cost, and the two dinners will be the only ones served at Antonio’s throughout the day. Take out orders will also be available. Proceeds from this fundraiser will go towards the purchase of cooking and serving utensils and small equipment for the newly-remodeled Parish kitchen.
