Former Cortez resident Dana Steerman passed away in her home in Aztec, N.M. on Dec. 13, 2012.
Dana was born to Marjorie and Marion Steerman on Dec. 8, 1951, in Cortez where she was raised with three older brothers. She graduated Cortez High School and attended some college. Dana participated in 4-H while growing up on the family farm. After growing up on a farm, she loved all animals both large and small. Dana could not pass by a homeless animal on the street and not bring them home. Her children also followed their mother in her great love of animals.
Her hobbies included sewing, crocheting, quilting and cooking. Some of the fondest memories her children have of her is all the baking and cooking that was done during the holidays. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren whenever possible.
Dana is survived by her oldest brother, Dan Steerman and wife Beth, both of Sunnyville, Texas; daughter, Zenda and husband Scott Wylie and their three boys, Ethan, Calib and Gannon; and by her son, Tyrrell Kirt and his daughter, Aliyah Rose, both of Aztec.
Dana was preceded in death by her son, Kenneth Merit Labato; both of her parents; and by her twin brothers, Teddy and Terry Steerman.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 18, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 1700 E. Empire St. in Cortez.
