Landfill announces holiday closures, new disposal rules

Montezuma County Landfill will be closed on Tuesday, Dec. 25, Saturday, Dec. 29 and Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013. Limited disposal service will be available on Mondays, Dec. 24, and Dec. 31, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Disposal will be limited to regular trash, dead animals and limb/yard diversion. As trash will not be baled on these days, customers are reminded the landfill cell can be muddy and difficult to use. Further, the landfill is not responsible for any flat tires that may occur to customers. As the landfill is a working area, customers are reminded to watch out for hazards such as large trucks and blowing trash and to keep their children and pets inside their vehicles at all times.

The landfill has a green Four Corners Recycling Initiative recycling bin as one of the drop off locations for the county which is available at no charge for customers, however, users are expected to stop at the scale and weigh in and out so accurate tonnages can be obtained for material recycled. Material accepted includes corrugated cardboard, mixed office and residential paper, and mixed metal cans. Other green bins are located in Mancos and Dolores.

In 2012, the Colorado legislature passed expanded disposal bans for all electronic waste (e-waste). Therefore, effective Jan. 1, 2013, no electronic waste can be disposed of in the Montezuma County Landfill. Since 2005, the landfill has hosted a spring and fall e-waste event to collect, process and ship e-waste to a responsible vendor. "These events have always been open to residents to participate in voluntarily," said Deborah Barton, landfill manager, in a written news release. "Our next event will be April 19-20, 2013."
