Learn about alpacas without having to own one. Alpaca 4-H meets two Sundays a month; our program introduces 4-H members, ages 8 to 18, to the care, training and maintenance of alpacas. The alpacas do not live with you, but remain up at the Alpacas at Butlers Corner Ranch, 20503 County Road 31, in Dolores. We also offer weaving, knitting, and crocheting (heritage arts) and felting (ethnic arts) projects and have materials available. Come visit and experience the Alpaca 4-H. Bereavement Support Groups and Classes
Hospice of Montezuma offers several free community bereavement support groups at their location of 1345 S. Broadway, Cortez. The last Tuesday of every month from 5:15 to 6 p.m. the group meets to discuss any loss issue. A group for individuals mourning the loss of their pet meets from 5:15 to 7:15 p.m. on the third Wednesday of every month. One on one sessions are available upon request for anyone wishing to discuss any particular bereavement issue in a private, or family meeting atmosphere. The Character Council meets from noon to 1:30 p.m. the first Thursday of every month at the Montezuma County Sheriff's Office, 730 E. Driscoll, Cortez. A person's character predicts future actions. Four Corners 9-12 Project
The Four Corners 9-12 Project meets at 7 p.m. the first and third Monday of each month at the Elks Lodge, 2100 N. Dolores Road, Cortez. The group will not meet during the month of December. The Four States Ag Expo supports the spectrum of agriculture in the four states region (AZ, CO, NM, and UT). We promote innovation and build knowledge within the industry, and raise general awareness of regional agricultural products, methods, and issues. Free Legal Services Clinic
A local attorney conducts a free legal services clinic on an ongoing basis to answer general questions about the law and court procedures. This service is available at no charge on Thursday evenings between 5 and 6 p.m. at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, 110 W. North St. in Cortez. These meetings will be for informational purposes only, and not to establish an attorney-client agreement. Questions may be about a variety of subjects such as small claims, divorce and child support, as well as wills and probate. No criminal consultation will be available; if representation is needed in a criminal case, persons should contact a private attorney, or the Public Defender at 247-9284. I Am Community
The "I Am Community" is a newly-forming group of people who are creating a community of cooperation, which will be able to provide much of its own sustainable energy, food and some medical care independent as possible from existing infrastructures. We are looking to become a completely self-sufficient, sustainable, powerful network in Montezuma County. We recognize that all people have something to contribute and all are welcome. Healing Hearts holds a monthly Intenders Circle meeting and potluck on the first Friday of the month at 6 p.m. at 206 E. Montezuma, in Cortez. Montelores School and Public Employees' Retirement Association
The Montelores (Montezuma-Dolores) School and Public Employees' Retirement Association meets five times a year, twice in spring and twice in autumn, with a February social event. The other four meetings entail agenda items of timely, informative issues pertinent to retirees from the state of Colorado, including the Colorado Department of Transportation, schools, judicial and local government. Southwest Intertribal Voice
Southwest Intertribal Voice meets at 6 p.m. the second Wednesday of each month, at 3900 South Hwy. 160, just south of Road D. Our meetings are held jointly with the Montelores Human Relations Coalition. Sweats in the sweat lodge are at 5:30 p.m. on the first and third Wednesdays of each month. We are a non-profit and incorporated group. Our mission is to increase awareness of traditional cultural values of all native Americans. At present, we are building a ceremonial hogan on our land on the site of the former All Nations Medicine Lodge. TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) meets every Friday at 11:30 a.m. in the Cortez Public Library conference room, 202 N. United Search and Rescue
United Search and Rescue has its monthly business meetings every fourth Monday of the month at 7 p.m. at the Montezuma County Sheriff's Office, 730 E. Veteran's Assistance Group
An unofficial Veteran's Assistance Group meets on the second Tuesday of every month at 7:30 p.m. at 24993 County Road S, north of Cortez (the corner of Lebanon Road and County Road S). Find help with disability claims, applications for education benefits, contacting Veterans Assistance Association, medical benefits, and appeals, or just get help dealing with the system.
