Daves, Gustafson win wrestling titles at Indian Invitational Saturday
Ryan Daves keeps on winning.
The 138-pound Montezuma-Cortez High School wrestler remained undefeated Saturday at the Montrose Indian Invitational.
The senior scored three pins on the day to take first-place. Daves pinned Matt Sandoval (Montrose), Gunner Chesnik (Paonia) and Erik Romero (Pueblo West).
Trenton Gustafson also took first at 182 pounds.
The senior pinned his way to gold with wins over Cody Frantz (Olathe), Kyle Bludworth (Pueblo West) and Morgan Reider (Paonia).
Seager Oliver dropped down to 160 and took second.
Oliver, a sophomore, won by technical fall over Mitch Hiler, of Grand Junction. He then defeated Nucla's Tray Sickles by ride-out decision to advance to the finals. But Oliver lost a tough decision to Montrose's Marcus Velasquez.
Younger brother Parker Oliver went 2-2 at 120 pounds. The freshman won a hard fought overtime decision against Brett Hart of Pueblo West. Parker Oliver scored a pin over Freddie Gaye of Nucla. He lost by pin to Grand Junction's Hayden Reynolds and fell by decision to Palisade's Alejandro Gutierrez.
Celestino Fernandez went 1-2 at 106 pounds for the Panthers.
Levi Gross (126), Justice Ramos (145) and Tyler Hageman (152) also competed.
"I thought for having a month off, they looked pretty good in general. They picked up close to where we left off," M-CHS coach Eric Smith said. "Now, we got to get back in the groove of wrestling every week. Hopefully, they pick up the pace in the next few weeks."
The Panthers will wrestle Friday and Saturday at the Page (Ariz.) Tournament.
"This is the first time we are attending it. We're excited to go and maybe it's something we can do every year," Smith said. "We'll get to see a lot of kids we don't see throughout the year, so it will give our kids different looks. Hopefully, that will prepare them for regionals and the state tournament."
Action begins Friday at 1 p.m.
