Middlesex DA Leone considers US Senate race
Middlesex County District Attorney Gerard Leone says he is seriously considering running in the special election to fill the U.S. Senate seat formerly held by Secretary of State John Kerry.
The Boston Globe ( http://bo.st/11ApvFW) reported on its website Saturday that the 50-year-old Leone says he has been encouraged by friends and political allies to get into the Democratic primary scheduled for April 30. Congressmen Edward Markey and Stephen Lynch are also seeking the party's nomination.
Leone, a former federal and state prosecutor, has handled many high-profile cases, including the 2003 prosecution of attempted airline shoe bomber Richard Reid and the 2011 manslaughter trial of Olympic figure skater Nancy Kerrigan's brother for their father's death.
Last month, he said he wouldn't seek a third term as district attorney in 2014 and had decided to leave public service.
