Weir hits second home run in Blanding

Dolores played its final regular season baseball tournament in Blanding, Utah, last week.

The Bears varsity played two games and their hitting was dormant against Beehive State teams.

Dolores got stung, losing 8-1 to Monticello and 11-3 to Millard. The Bears junior varsity lost 25-0 to South Sevier's varsity.

"The bats just went cold. We fielded pretty good, we just weren't hitting. You just never know," first-year Dolores coach Chris Barry said. "We just didn't clutch our hits together."

Tyler Weir highlighted the tourney when he hit his second home run of the season for the Bears (4-6) against Millard.

Dolores will use much of its spring break this week to rest up for Saturday's home opener against Blanding's San Juan High School.

"I think it was good to play a bunch of games together. I'm still trying to figure out who fits better and see what works best. I think I got it figured out now," Barry said. "It's a good group of kids. They need a couple days off. They deserve a little rest."

Coach Barry hopes to go into San Juan Basin League play next week with momentum.

"It's totally good to be on a roll," he said. "I see flashes of brilliance in these kids. Once we put it together, we're going to be super solid and be able to compete with anybody. I think we're almost there."

Chaz Thompson, if healthy, is slated to start on the mound Saturday with Cody Carroll closing.

First pitch versus the San Juan Broncos is at 11 a.m. at Joe Rowell Park.
