Cora Mae Smith

Cora Mae Smith passed away Saturday June 22, 2013, at the Hope West Hospice care center in Grand Junction, Co.

Cora was born Feb. 6, 1926, the third of four children born in Micawber, Oklahoma to Albert and Lona Lankford. Her mother passed away when she was three years old, which left Albert to raise four little ones. He married her stepmother Ella, who had five children of her own. Cora was raised in Oklahoma and was very close to her eight siblings.

While working as a waitress in Bristow, Okla., she met the love of her life, George A. Smith. She and George were married March 25, 1946. They moved to Cortez in 1947 and raised two daughters, Nance Mae and Betty Jane. Cora worked the night shift as a waitress so she could be home with her daughters during the day. In 1960 she started to work for the school district preparing meals for the cafeteria. She continued to work there until her retirement in 1990. She then relocated to Fruita, Colo., in 2006 to be near her daughter, Betty Conoley. In 2008 she moved to Grand Junction to Mesa View Retirement apartments. She enjoyed living there and taking part in outings, craft sessions and working in the country store.

Cora Mae was an amazing woman, with an unquestioning faith in the Lord. She read her Bible from beginning to end every year. She loved little children and they loved her in return. She was giving and wanted to help with anything that needed to be done. She was an accomplished seamstress, enjoyed crocheting, tatting and quilting and in later life became a puzzle queen. She worked jigsaw puzzles all of the time; as soon as one was finished it was put back in the box and another one started. She loved to garden and worked long hours in her yard. Cora will be sorely missed by her family and friends.

Cora is survived by her sister Freda (George) Denny of Firth, Idaho, and her daughter Betty Conoley of Grand Junction, six grandchildren and their families, Jeff Conoley, Stephanie Scott, Johnny Nelson, Rhonda Welch, Daniel Nelson and Melissa Piper; 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Cora was preceded in death by her husband, George; her daughter, Nance; her parents and several siblings.

Funeral services will be held at the Lighthouse Baptist Church, 1145 Highway Cortez, on Friday June 28, at 10 a.m., with burial in the Cortez Cemetery. The family requests donations be made in her name to your favorite charity.
