Nick Christopher Padilla
Nick Christopher Padilla entered eternal life Thursday, Sept. 19, 2013. Nick was born Aug. 16, 1944, in the Bronx, N.Y. When Nick was 9 he was put into a strict Catholic orphanage after his father died. Nick left the orphanage at age 16 to make his own way in life; he worked in Italian delis as a young man and learned to cook.
Nick met his wife, Jessica Pilegard, in 1964, and they had four children together. In 1997, Nick moved to Cortez to live the rest of his years. Nick had a very cynical sense of humor, which was very entertaining to friends and family. He was at his happiest when he was cooking at home or gambling at the casino. Nick had a hard time showing affection because of the hard life he lived, but he always made family feel loved through the food he cooked. He went out of his way for people quite often. Later in life, Nick worked as a funeral director for many years in Southern California and briefly in Cortez before his health started to fade. He enjoyed that profession the most. Nick and his food will be greatly missed, and Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners will definitely feel empty without him.
Nick is survived by his wife of 47 years Jessica Padilla of Cortez; children, David Joseph Padilla and partner Sharles Harrison of Farmington N.M., Nicholas C. Padilla and partner Janet Elia of Cortez, Desiree Ann Burnham and husband Jeff Burnham of Cortez, Neil F. Padilla and wife Dorothena Padilla of Cortez; sister Gladys Padilla of New York; and numerous grandchildren.
