Irene Julia Ballode

Irene Julia Ballode was born Sept. 7, 1930, to Oscar and Lena Ebe, the sixth of seven children.

Her childhood was spent on the family farm in Custer, Wash. She graduated from Ferndale High School in 1948 and attended Oregon State University in Corvallis, Ore. She married Pete Ballode on Nov. 14, 1959, and moved from Seattle to Cortez in 1963.

Irene devoted her life to raising her children, gardening, sewing and volunteering at church.

She also taught 4H sewing and leather craft. She remained active in her PEO group. After her children graduated from high school, she worked 10 years for Love Appraisals. She and Pete lived in Cortez for 20 years, moved to Dolores for another 20 years and then settled in Grand Junction in 2003. Irene and Pete were able to pursue several years of worldwide travel. After Pete passed away in 2010, she continued with volunteer work at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction until her death on Jan. 9, 2014.

Services and internment will be in Ferndale, Wash.

Irene is survived by her three children, Diane (Mitch) Meleski, Linda Yeoman and David (Kyle) Ballode, and seven grandchildren: Rachel and Leah Meleski; Kevin and Renee Yeoman; and Kathryn, Kendall and Morgan Ballode.
