Vada Iris Small

Funeral services for longtime Cortez resident Vada Iris Small were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 1, at Ertel Memorial Chapel. Pastor Anthony Maes officiated, with interment following at Cortez Cemetery.

Vada was born March 6, 1929, to Vera and Neeley Roe in Long Pine, Neb. She passed away at Vista Grande Inn in Cortez on Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014.

On June 4, 1950, Vada married J.E. Small in Aztec, N.M., and to this union five children were born. She enjoyed gardening, canning and playing cards. Her favorite was gathering family and friends to go on a picnic. Vada worked retail for years and then she had a day care center in her home until she retired. Her family meant everything to her. Vada is survived by her five children, Patsy Rassmussen and husband, Albert Archuleta of Cuba, N.M., Jim Small and wife, Theresa of Cortez, Gary Small and wife, Susie of Mancos, Don Small and wife, Donna of Arriola, and Judy Potter and husband, Wayne of Dolores; ten grandchildren, Cody, Bart, Misty, Cassie, Tiffany, Rosa, David, J.D., Jamie, and Joseph; 15 great grandchildren; sister, Lois Rutledge and husband, Bill; brother Darwin Roe and wife, Maggie; brother- in-law, Sid Powell; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, J.E. Small; parents, Vera and Neeley Roe; sisters, Lilly Mae James and Irma Powell; brother, Darrell Roe; sister-in-laws, Leora Roe and Peggy Roe; one granddaughter; and one great grandson.

Vada will be missed by all who knew and loved her. God saw she was getting tired so he put his arms around her and whispered, “Come with me”.
