Chandler Rayland Phillips

Funeral services for lifelong Cortez resident Chandler Rayland Phillips will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 11 at Ertel Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow at Cortez Cemetery.

Chandler Rayland Phillips was born Sept. 3, 1975, in Cortez to Wilson Rayland and Marie (Billie) Phillips. He died at his Cortez home on Sunday, April 6, 2014. He was 38.

His schooling started in the Aneth community where he attended kindergarten through 4th grade. After moving to Cortez, Chandler attended 5th and 6th grades at Mesa Elementary, Middle School and MCHS, graduating in 1993. In high school, he participated in rodeo, and was on the Pow Wow trail singing with other tribes in South Dakota, Montana, Canada and the Native American Gathering in Albuquerque. He loved art, riding his motorcycle, camping, hunting, fishing and outdoor activities. He spent years working in the oil field in Utah and New Mexico.

Survivors include his parents, Wilson and Marie Phillips of Cortez; three sons, Dedan Powless of Cortez, Shane Phillips of Porcupine, S.D. and Chanshy Phillips of Shiprock, N.M.; and aunts and uncles, Rosella Burchers of Cortez, Nelson and Violet Billie of Cortez, Betty and Leonard Livington of Albuquerque, N.M., Lorraine and Myron George of Salem, Ore., Caroline and Randy Huskey of Santa Fe, N.M., Norman and Daisy Billie of Cahone Mesa, Utah, Sarah Billie of Cortez and Selena Billie of Brigham City, Utah. Chandler was preceded in death by his grandparents, Thomas and Emma Billie and Tony and Lillie Phillips; aunts and uncles, Dennis Billie, Eugene Johnson, Ned R. Phillips, Charles Phillips, Peter Phillips, and Nellie Chavez; sister, Cora Phillips; and brother, Alfred Phillips.
