Jennifer Dawn Kennedy
Durango resident Jennifer Dawn Kennedy died Sunday, Nov. 11, 2012, at her home. She was 39. The cause of death was not disclosed.
Ms. Kennedy was born to Jerry and Judy (Bagwell) Jones on May 7, 1973, in Tulsa, Okla. Her family moved to Durango in June 1973, when Ms. Kennedy was only 1 month old. She graduated from Durango High School in 1991.
Her family said she loved Durango, and she lived here most of her life.
After graduating from high school, Ms. Kennedy was fortunate enough to live near the beach in Hawaii for two years, her family said. She went to room with an old friend and worked in a knife shop and as a hotel maid.
She returned to attend San Juan College in Farmington for two years, where she graduated with a certificate in early-childhood development. She worked in the Child and Family Development Center at the college.
While living in Farmington, Ms. Kennedy went on a mission trip to work in an orphanage in Nairobi, Kenya.
In the mid-2000s, she married Jimmy Kennedy in Durango. He died three months later of a massive heart attack.
Most recently, she was attending Southwest Colorado Community College and recently received her certified nursing assistant certification. Ms. Kennedy was continuing her studies in early-childhood development at the community college.
She enjoyed reading, spending time outdoors and watching wild animals. She was also a dog lover.
She was a member of First Southern Baptist Church.
“Jennifer was always interested in children and serving others,” her family said.
Ms. Kennedy is survived by her parents, Jerry and Judy Jones, of Durango; her sister Dawn Terracino of Schriever, La.; two nieces; a great-niece; and numerous aunts and uncles.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16, 2012, at Greenmount Cemetery in Durango. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012, at First Southern Baptist Church, 1715 West Second Ave. A reception will be held afterward.
In lieu of flowers, a fund in her name has been established at First Southern Baptist Church, 1715 West Second Ave., Durango, CO 81301.
