Ignacio native Lupe M. Alexander, 83, died of cancer Friday, Feb. 1, 2013, at home, surrounded by her family. She was 83.

Mrs. Alexander was born July 4, 1929, in Ignacio to Manuel and Encarnacion Jaques. She grew up on the family ranch and attended school at the Harvey School south of Ignacio. She was part of a large family of three brothers and five sisters.

She married William “Junior” Alexander on June 19, 1957, in Aztec. Mrs. Alexander faithfully worked in the cafeteria at Ignacio schools for 40 years, her family said. They added that Ignacio School District 11-JT will dedicate the cafeteria at the new school in her name, calling it “Café Lupe.”

Mrs. Alexander was preceded in death by her husband, William “Junior” Alexander, in 1998, two grandsons and a great-granddaughter.

She is survived by her daughters Debbie Herrera of Ignacio, and Viola Shahan of Houston; son, Douglas Jacquez, of Oakley, Calif., sister, Teddy Orton, of Grimes, Iowa; 12 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2013, at St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Ignacio. A Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 8, 2013, also at St. Ignatius. The Rev. Douglas Hunt will officiate. Cremation will occur at Hood Mortuary Crematory in Durango.

Memorial contributions will be accepted at the services or on Saturday, Feb. 9, at Ignacio Elementary School from noon to 9 p.m.
