Womans body found in Walmart lot
A Durango woman appears to have committed suicide by overdosing on prescription pills in the sprawling parking lot outside Walmart.
Pamela Beckert, 54, was reported missing and possibly suicidal Jan. 16 by her roommate, said Investigator Burke Baldwin, with the Durango Police Department.
She was found dead Jan. 22 in a red Jeep parked in a remote area of the parking lot north of Walmart, he said. Police found an empty prescription bottle in the car, and Beckert had a history of attempted suicide by pills, Baldwin said.
There were no signs of trauma or foul play.
The results of an autopsy are pending.
Beckert made news in 2008 while working as a security guard at Planned Parenthood in Durango.
A Pagosa Springs man was protesting the nonprofit’s abortion services when his sign blew across the property line. The man ran onto the property to chase the sign, and a physical encounter ensued between him and Beckert.
Beckert suffered head, neck, back, ankle and shoulder injuries.
A jury convicted the protester of trespassing and assault.
