Seven applicants apply for open judgeship

Annual salary tops out at $128,598

Seven residents have applied for a district court judgeship opening in the 6th Judicial District, which covers Archuleta, San Juan and La Plata counties.

The candidates are Steven Boos of Ignacio; Todd Starr of Pagosa Springs; and William Herringer, Sarah Law, Todd Norvell, Todd Risberg and E. Michelle Sylvain, all of Durango.

The vacancy is being created by District Judge David Dickinson, who announced last month he plans to retire at the end of this month.

Risberg serves as district attorney for the 6th Judicial District, Law is a magistrate for the district and Norvell is a former prosecutor with the 6th Judicial District and works as a prosecutor with the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Durango.

Boos works at the private firm Maynes, Bradford, Shipps & Sheftel, and Sylvain is a lawyer who assists judges in the 6th Judicial District.

Herringer practices criminal defense, and Starr is the county attorney and interim county administrator for Archuleta County.

The application period has closed.

The candidates will be interviewed in private by the 6th Judicial District Nominating Commission. The public also has an opportunity to comment on the qualifications of the applicants.

The local nominating commission will recommend three candidates to Gov. John Hickenlooper, who will interview the candidates and name his selection.

The Colorado Judicial Branch did not lay out a timeline for the selection process.

The annual salary for the position is $128,598.

The initial term of office of a district judge is a provisional term of two years. After that, voters decide whether to retain the judge for a term of six years.

The members of the nominating commission are Lisa Scott and James Ford of Pagosa Springs; Stephen Fearn of Silverton; and John Baxter, Thomas Shipps, Robert Oswald and Gary Lindsay of Durango.
