Man pleads guilty to sexual assault on minors

A Durango man who gave marijuana to children in exchange for sexual favors pleaded guilty Friday in 6th Judicial District Court.

Shelton Oliver Urquidez, 36, faces up to two years in prison after pleading guilty to contributing to the delinquency of a minor, a felony and sexual assault, a misdemeanor, in a plea agreement with the 6th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

Sentencing is set for 10:30 a.m. April 19 before District Judge Suzanne Carlson.

According to the plea agreement, Urquidez provided marijuana to two teenagers – ages 15 and 16 – smoked the drug with them, and committed a sexual assault that included penetration.

One of the boys told police the marijuana seemed to be laced with some other drug that had a much stronger effect on him than normal marijuana, according to an arrest report.

The boy said he passed out on the couch and awoke to find Urquidez with no shirt, socks or shoes.

The assault occurred sometime in March at Urquidez’s house in the east 500 block of 29th Street.

Police learned of the assault Nov. 8 from the Colorado Department of Human Services, which ultimately learned about it from a therapist at a drug-rehabilitation center where the teen was receiving treatment.

The boy said the marijuana smelled and tasted different that normal marijuana.

“We smoked some weed with him, but the weed was laced with something,” the boy told police. He said it stupefied him to where “I couldn’t even register what was going on. I remember vaguely, very blurry certain things that occurred.

“I couldn’t really talk or register what was going on,” he told police. “I was kinda telling him ‘no,’ and that I didn’t want to do anything.”
