Darlene M. Martinez Tura

Former Durango resident Darlene M. Martinez Tura died of a rare lung disease, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012, in St. Petersburg, Fla. She was 57.

Mrs. Tura was born to Sylvan J. and Estefanita M. (Atencio) Martinez on May 21, 1955, in Durango. One of 11 children, she grew up here, graduating from Durango High School in the early 1970s.

She moved from Durango in 1975 to Massachusetts, where she met her future husband, Robert C. Tura. The couple married during the early 1980s in Massachusetts.

The couple traveled the world after Mr. Tura’s military postings. Mrs. Tura taught English while living in Japan.

She also enjoyed doing crafts and sharing her work with the public.

“Her passion was caring for her husband, Robert, her son, Mike, and their dog, Shelby,” her family said.

Mrs. Tura is survived by her husband of 30 years, Robert C. Tura, of Melbourne, Fla.; son, Mike Tura, of Japan; brothers Joe Martinez of Bayfield, Rick Martinez of Durango, Augustine Martinez of Albuquerque and Mario Martinez of Marysville, Ohio; sisters Mary Lee Maestas of Albuquerque, Mary Lou Eden of Tooele, Utah, Caroline Martinez of Roy, Utah, Betty Patno of Londonderry, N.H., and Sylvia Martinez of Lynn, Mass.; and numerous extended family members.

Cremation has occurred. A family celebration of life will be held.
