DENVER – State Rep. Mike McLachlan is hospitalized in Denver after complications from surgery.

McLachlan, D-Durango, had surgery last week to repair his lower intestine. He’s back in the hospital now after suffering internal bleeding, but he’s expected to make a full recovery, said his daughter, Kate McLachlan.

McLachlan missed the better part of two weeks at the Legislature when he was in the hospital with intestinal problems. He returned to the Legislature on March 28 after surgery.

But this week, he started bleeding internally.

“I’m pretty sure it’s because he got back to work too quickly. He’s a workaholic,” Kate McLachlan said.

She brought him paperwork Thursday and said he was complaining about being bored in the hospital.

As of Friday, doctors were observing McLachlan to see if the bleeding would stop or if he needed a second surgery.

“He is uncomfortable from it, and it’s making him feel really sick, but there’s no reason he shouldn’t recover from it,” Kate McLachlan said.

McLachlan – a Durango lawyer and former Colorado solicitor general – is serving his first term.

Five of his bills have passed through the Legislature so far. Three more are awaiting action in the House.

He’s had an eventful first year, and he’s the target of a recall campaign by gun-rights activists.

McLachlan’s wife, Barbara, a Durango High School teacher, is on her way to visit him, their daughter said.
